In this four-day class across two weekends, students will learn everything they need to know to write their own fantasy novel or short story. They will learn the basics such as what the genre of fantasy is, what makes it different than science fiction, common tropes and elements found in fantasy fiction such as magic and magical creatures, as well as how to create compelling characters, how to create a magic system and a world bible, and much more. Students will be encouraged to share their own ideas, come up with new ones, and create a story portfolio. By the end of the course, students will have the start of their first novel and the knowledge to continue it, finish it and then write another one.
Helen “Adalen” Hieble (she/they) majored in Fantasy Literature and minored in Disability Studies. She has been a lover of all things fantasy since childhood, growing up with media such as The Last Unicorn, Lord of the Rings, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to name a few and has been writing fantasy for almost as long. Her published works include LGBTQ fantasy novella The Wizard of Hirodenal, children’s picture book Kittens? Kittens! Rosie and Mimi and Me, and a few guided journals for writers and collectors. Her short story, Soulmates Forever, is published in the Women’s Writing Circle’s latest anthology, Moments of Love.
